Information about Architectural Engineering Schools

Architectural engineers design and plan buildings and other structures. Preparing for a career in this field requires extensive education and hands-on experience that cannot be accomplished with on-the-job training.

What Architectural Engineering Schools can Offer

In order to make an entry into the world of architectural engineering, a bachelor’s degree is a must, and a master’s is ideal. A few subjects students can expect architectural engineering schools to offer include:

• Engineering physics-Helps students learn to plan safe structures

• Fluid mechanics-Aids with incorporating water lines into buildings

• Environmental engineering-Teaches students the impact of building materials and techniques on the environment

• Electrical engineering-Ensures safe installation and operation of electricity into various structures

• Earthquake-resistant design-Helpful in designing buildings that can withstand earthquakes

• Structural analysis-Enables workers to analyze existing structures and make modifications that will enhance safety

Online Schools

Admittance to online degree programs is very limited. Students must generally have at least a bachelor’s degree in architecture or a related field along with three years of actual work experience in order to be accepted into a program. Two colleges that offer online programs include:

• Northcentral University in Prescott, Arizona

• Arizona State University located in Tempe, Arizona

High School Preparation and Admittance Procedures

High school students should plan to take the following courses in order to be admitted to an architectural engineering school:

• Four years of English

• Physics

• Calculus

• Two years of social studies

The minimum GPA required to enter architectural engineering school is 3.75, and could be even higher if applying to an Ivy League college. A minimum SAT score of 2,200 is required in order to remain competitive with other applicants. Applicants should rank in the top ten to 15 percent of their graduating class. Those who have participated in extracurricular activities or performed community service while in high school have an advantage over other applicants. Applications along with high school transcripts and three letters of recommendation should be submitted as early as possible during the senior year.

Those who pursue a degree in architectural engineering will have a challenging academic road ahead of them. It’s never too early to begin preparing for this degree program, and the extra effort will be well worth it in the long run.
